Chen Residence
The Japanese-style room washitsu was widely accepted in Taiwanese interior design 20 years ago. It was usually used as a multi-functional room for kids playing around, a study room, or a guest room. Except for the notion of old-fashioned style that most people nowadays reckon, it was also seen as a dark, isolated, and useless space in the house, becoming a storage room.
In this case, we would like to enlarge the common space in a continuous axis by turning the washitsu into a transparent study room and opening up the kitchen, which used to be partitioned by the walls. In this way, the zoning of the function in the house did not dramatically change. Still, the space became fresh, light, and spacious with precise measurement adjustment and the selection of light materials.
